The Executive Office of Health and Human Services has partnered with public colleges and universities in Rhode Island to offer free or reduced-cost trainings to help you prepare for, or advance in, a healthcare career. HCBS Overdose Response Training / Programa Comunitario de Primeros Auxilios: HCBS Respuesta a Sobredosis (Español)

Description: The HCBS workforce has direct access to patients and others in their homes or community settings which increases the likelihood of exposure to a person experiencing an overdose period this program will increase knowledge about the opioid epidemic, the ability to respond appropriately in an overdose situation, and provide training about how to administer naloxone. This one-hour-long training is targeted towards paraprofessionals in the HCBS sector. As a result of this activity, learners will be able to recognize and respond to opioid-involved respiratory depression.

Description: The curriculum is designed for direct care staff working with older adults and their caretakers. The training is designed to build knowledge related to Dementia and diseases that cause Dementia. Mental Health First Aid Training Program

Provider: URI

Description: Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with people in need and connect them with appropriate help. Mental Health First Aid is a high-impact program that is listed in SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidenced Based Programs and Practices. This training program addresses the need for frontline healthcare workers to have the tools to recognize and appropriately support patients experiencing mental health concerns. This training prepares staff to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health distress, as well as gain greater confidence in knowing how to assist and support someone who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Participants are more equipped to identify the available resources to which they can refer someone who they believe may be experiencing a mental health concern and need a higher level of professional support.

Certificate is available upon course completion. CE credit is available for licensed healthcare professionals.

Medication Administration Technician Training

Provider: URI

Description: This program responds to the urgent need within congregate facilities for qualified staff certified to administer medications to residents. Eligible participants are licensed CNAs currently employed at congregate care healthcare facilities including long-term healthcare and rehab facilities, short-term healthcare facilities, and assisted living facilities. Selected participants are upskilled from their current CNA role to become trained and licensed through the RI Department of Health as a Medication Aide Technician, filling an important gap in the healthcare workforce, while also creating the ability for participants to move up the healthcare career ladder into higher wage roles. Once participants complete the course, they are required to complete 3 Medication passes under supervision at their facility. Once completed, the participants are able to apply for the Medication Aide license from the RI DOH and become certified as Medication Aides. 15-week course held on Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm.

Medication Technician license available from RIDOH with application, transcript, and proof of 3 Medication passes.
